jon Weiss

Jon is consistently recognized as one of the top business litigation and professional liability lawyers in Arizona by leading ratings publications. His peers respect him for his straightforward approach, courtroom acumen, and exceptional writing skills, and his clients appreciate his reliability, efficiency, and outside-the-box thinking.

Jon can handle nearly any type of commercial dispute, but his particular focus is in the areas of professional liability, lawyer discipline, and appeals. He is a lawyer who other lawyers seek out when they have a problem, including needing help with a big appeal. He also regularly represents clients in high-dollar business disputes, cases involving claims against corporate officers and directors, and real estate litigation.

A former prosecutor, Jon has successfully tried dozens of cases, including legal malpractice, commercial contract and real estate disputes, employee misconduct, franchisor/franchisee lawsuits, and criminal cases from DUI to alleged murder. He has successfully handled appeals throughout the Southwest.

Some of Jon’s matters have included:

  • Successful representation of dozens of lawyers and law firms–ranging from lawyers at some of the largest firms in the world to sole practitioners–in legal malpractice cases, sanctions proceedings, and state bar disciplinary matters.
  • Total defense verdicts after trial in several multi-million-dollar legal malpractice cases arising out of matters varying from products liability, to securities fraud, to corporate restructuring, to business buyouts.
  • Obtaining at trial the first-known damages award in Arizona for a landlord seeking to recover lost value damages for breach of a continuous operation provision in a commercial lease.
  • Prevailing across the board, in both the trial court and on appeal, in defending a multi-million-dollar class action suit.
  • Winning at trial and on appeal in a groundbreaking case in which plaintiff alleged the statute of limitations should be tolled because he allegedly suffered from repressed memory syndrome.

Jon frequently represents underserved clients on a pro bono basis and has received several awards for his pro bono work. He has led or been part of teams that have succeeded in overturning the convictions of multiple people accused and convicted of crimes they did not commit, including American citizens wrongfully imprisoned abroad. He also has served on a nationwide network of lawyers working with college student Dreamers who face constant threats to their immigration status after being brought to this country when they were young children.

Jon and his wife, Anita, continually marvel at how they (who are both as un-sciency as they come) managed to raise two daughters who are pursuing STEM careers. Jon is a collector of political memorabilia and has campaign buttons for just about every major presidential candidate of the last 100 years.
